May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Lynette Vega is a facilitator for Survivors of Suicide Loss, a support group, and co-founder of “Zero Suicides Elko County,” a network and advocacy collaborative. Vega is also a Life Skills teacher with the Elko Institute for Academic Achievement, Elko’s Charter School. The program focused on balancing social media to maintain wellness, local support from NAMI, and the significance of parent and community involvement in bringing awareness and ongoing support.
Elko County leaders are honing a final budget, anticipating change as a result of the Barrick Newmont joint venture now known as “Nevada Gold Mines,” and are anxious to learn how the region will be impacted by decisions made at the Nevada Legislature. Commissioner Delmo Andreozzi has identified mental health awareness and suicide prevention as priorities as the community navigates a growing
