Guest Evi Buell is a tenured college English professor, Vice Chair of the Elko City Planning Commission and is transitioning. She talks about her experience in navigating physical, emotional and social complications in rural Nevada. The Elko County School Board is making adjustments to the Elko County School District Policy that applies to Gender Non-Conforming Students and while the policy addresses some aspects of gender discrimination it also defines “Gender” as “means a student’s biological sex assigned at birth.” The board has already been scrutinized by the ACLU for a previous policy that denied a middle school transgender student access to a male bathroom and locker room.
Elko City Police Chief Tyler Trouten and County Sheriff Aitor Narvaiza discussed enforcement issues surrounding an extended closure of non-essential businesses to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The pair also underscored the need for support of those with mental illness and emphasized social distancing and good hygiene practices. Chief Trouten urged OHV safety in city limits.
