Train Carrying Munitions Derails

June 19, 2019 – Train Derails Near Wells

A Union Pacific train carrying military munitions derailed near Wells, Nevada Wednesday morning. Elko County Sheriff Aitor Narvaiza said no one was hurt when a dozen or so westbound cars derailed causing a container of aluminum oxide to rupture. The cars carrying explosives were toward the end of the train and remained intact. I-80 was closed in both directions until it was determined the spilled chemical was not hazardous. Investigation and cleanup continued on Thursday.
