Elko County Treasurer Cheryl Paul and County Commissioner Delmo Andreozzi explained an oversight in tax billing that resulted in a failure to assess some $3.7-million dollars to Elko County taxpayers. Commissioner Andreozzi explained the change in assessment was the result of AB 519 that singled out Elko County to carve out a tax rate for local school construction. Taxpayers will be billed for the amount that was overlooked with an average cost being $155 to a local homeowner. Nevada Gold Mines will pay more than 250-thousand-dollars because of the oversight. In a separate issue, the County Commissioners are being asked by the Nevada Coalition of Voters to send a letter to the Secretary of State requesting a change in the provisions to allow for hand counting of paper ballots.
